Context
The city is inherently multi-layered, continuously transforming through complex interactions. Yeongdeungpo, once Seoul's commercial center that defined an era, was likewise a mixed-use city where multiple layers of space and everyday life accumulated over time. Today, however, Yeongdeungpo's urban standing is shifting rapidly.
The rise of large shopping malls and the expansion of online consumption have driven the decline of traditional markets and small-scale retail districts. As time passed, the urban structure changed, and the city's productive functions disappeared—remaining like voids within the fabric.
Severed north–south by Gyeongin-ro and the railway, and marked by extreme spatial polarization between the high-density mixed-use core and the surrounding aging residential and commercial areas, the district now faces deep inequalities in quality of life and a concentration of development benefits.
In response to this urban crisis, we propose an 'Urban Platform' for Yeongdeungpo: a three-dimensional mixed-use city that goes beyond physical reconstruction, where community and commerce, housing and culture, mobility and staying can coexist in layered complexity.
Role
TA · 서울대학교 Urban Design Studio III (2025.03–06)
Approach
Outcome
Learnings
