The Pumping City — Integrating Blue Networks and Smart Logistics

Context
Contemporary urban planning still largely remains within a human-centered perspective. Yet, in response to climate change and global crises, there is a growing recognition that a more multidimensional and integrated approach to urban design is necessary.
We seek to move beyond the binary view of humans versus nature, and instead understand humans and non-humans as equal agents. Here, "non-human" does not simply refer to nature, but encompasses ecosystems, flora and fauna, and even technology.
The site has evolved through the process of urbanization around Yongsan Station since the 1900s. As a key node connecting Hanseong—the capital of the Joseon Dynasty—to regions across the country, Yongsan historically served as a major hub where people and logistics converged, and it also functioned as a strategic stronghold during wartime.
With modern urbanization, both the role of waterways and the hierarchy of urban functions shifted. Just as the city once expanded along Mancho Stream (만초천), this project seeks to redefine the site's identity — restoring Mancho Stream and repositioning the area as both a logistics hub and a central place within Seoul.

Approach
- Dual Flow 모델: 스마트 물류(경제 혈류) × 블루 네트워크(생태 혈류) — 도시의 두 혈류를 동시에 다루는 시스템 설계
- Mancho Stream 복원을 경관 보존이 아닌 도시 기반시설로 재정의
- 스펀지시티(Sponge City) 원리로 홍수 회복력 확보 + 일상 녹지 기능 결합
- 용산역 주변 물류 허브 재정립 — 과거의 교통·물자 집산지 정체성을 동시대 도시 기능으로 전환
Outcome
- 용산 원효로 일대 Blue-Logistics Integrated City 마스터플랜 도출
- 만초천 복원 축을 따라 물류·생태·주거 통합 네트워크 제안
- 복합개발 프로젝트에서 기반시설 연계·사업 구조 기획 관점 정립
Learnings
- 도시를 "형태(form)"가 아닌 **"흐름(flow)과 시스템(system)"**으로 볼 때 설계 해법의 차원이 달라짐을 체감
- 복원 프로젝트는 원형 복귀가 아니라 현재 도시 기능과의 통합으로 설계되어야 함
- 인간-비인간 공존 관점에서, 설계는 다중 행위자 네트워크를 조율하는 행위임을 실험
